The Titanic Compared With a Modern Cruiseship

A lot has changed since the Titanic set sail in 1912 until today. Today Cruise ships are larger, but how much bigger?

The Titanic was a passenger ship, completed in 1912 for the British White Star Line. At 46,328 gross tons, the Titanic was at this time the world's largest ship. It was put into operation on the Southampton – New York route.

Modern cruise ships are, on average, twice as high and 20% longer than the Titanic. The Titanic was only 269 meters long, 9 decks high, and had a gross tonnage of 46,000. In comparison, the avrage Royal Caribbian cruise is 325 meters long, 14 decks high and has a gross tonnage of 133,000.

As of June 2020, the largest cruise ship, Symphony of the Seas, has a gross tonnage of 228,081, is 361 metres (1,184 ft) long, 65.7 metres (216 ft) wide, and holds up to 6,680 passengers.
